Water Offered Without Words

“I was thirsty and you gave me drink.”Matthew 25:35

The glass is simply held out. No question about thirst. No comment on the day.

The other person takes it, or does not. The offer has already been made.

Jesus offered water, and he also asked for water. At the well he spoke with the woman. On the Cross he said that he thirsted. He told us that to give someone a drink is to care for him. The gift does not need a speech.

Water offered without words is an old mercy. It meets a basic need. It does not demand a conversation. It does not demand thanks.

You do not have to wait to be asked. You do not have to fill the silence that follows.

At Mass we remember that Christ comes to thirsty people. He does not wait for us to explain ourselves first. Then we are sent to notice the simple needs around us.

The glass is there.

That is the whole of it.
