A Blanket Pulled Higher

“I was naked and you clothed me.”Matthew 25:36

The shoulder is uncovered. You notice. You draw the blanket up without waking the person, or with only the lightest touch.

The body eases a little. The cold is less.

Jesus cared for the body, not only the soul. He said that to clothe someone is to care for him. He also let other people care for his body when he needed it. Covering what is exposed is part of love.

A blanket pulled higher does not cure the illness. It does not end the loneliness. It only answers the need that is in front of you right now.

You do not have to announce it. You do not have to wait to be thanked.

At Mass we honour Christ’s body. Then we are sent to honour the bodies of people who are tired, cold, or easily forgotten. Some of that honour is very small. It can still be true.

The warmth is adjusted.

The rest can stay unspoken.
