Mercy Without a Story
Updated: Sep 7
“Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.”John 21:25
No one will hear about it. No lesson will be drawn. No memory will be carefully kept.
The act simply happens. Then it joins the great number of unnoticed kindnesses that keep the world from being harder than it already is.
Jesus did many mercies that were never written down. The Gospel itself says so at the end. Not every good thing needs a record. God saw them. That was enough.
Mercy without a story is mercy that does not need an audience. It exists for the person who receives it, and for God who sees. It does not have to become a tale we tell about ourselves.
You do not have to remember it. You do not have to make it useful for other people.
At Mass, much of what God does is hidden. We see bread and wine. We hear familiar words. The deepest gift is not a performance. It is given, and then we go home.
It was given. That is the whole account.
