Forgiveness That Does Not Announce Itself
Updated: Sep 7
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”Luke 23:34
There is no speech. No big scene. Only the quiet decision not to keep the hurt warm.
The relationship goes on, or it is let go, without a public moment.
Jesus forgave in more than one way. Sometimes he said the words. On the Cross he asked the Father to forgive. Sometimes forgiveness was simply how he went on treating people. He did not wait for a perfect apology first.
Forgiveness that does not announce itself is often the kind that can last. It does not force the other person to perform sorrow on cue. It also does not pretend that nothing happened. The hurt was real. You simply stop feeding it.
You do not have to force a conversation. You do not have to tell everyone that you have forgiven.
At Mass we pray, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” We ask God to forgive us, and we ask for help to forgive. That prayer is not a show. It is a turning of the heart.
If all you can do today is stop turning the injury over in your mind, that is already mercy. God can work with that.
