Two small pieces of brown cloth. Most Catholics have seen them.

Many have one somewhere — in a drawer, a jewellery box, a wallet.

This booklet explains what a scapular actually is (a shoulder-habit, not a necklace), how a monastic garment became something lay people wear, what we can honestly say about St Simon Stock and 16 July, and what the famous promise does not mean.

It separates enrollment from shop-bought cloth, wool from the 1910 medal, and the great promise from the Saturday help the Church allowed Carmelites to preach.

The title is the whole argument: worn, not stored.
