A Catholic wedding is a sacrament spoken at an altar. In many Polish homes the day also has a doorway.
Before the cars leave for church, the couple kneel. A crucifix comes off the wall. Parents who once carried these children to the font now sign them with the Cross and let them go. After Mass someone stands in a frame with a loaf and a small dish of salt. May you never go hungry. May life not be bland, and may it not rot. The first married meal is often eaten standing up, still in the clothes of the church.
This little book is for couples preparing to marry, for parents who are afraid they will not find the words, and for anyone who has already posed with the bread and only later wondered what the loaf was for. Customs can travel. They can also become photographs of prayers nobody prayed. The pages try to give the gestures back their old meaning.
A Silent Homilies booklet. Written to be read in one or two sittings.
