Working When No One Is Watching
Updated: Sep 3
“And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.”Luke 2:51
The room is empty. The light is ordinary. No one will see the careful alignment, the extra tightening, the quiet correction of what was almost good enough.
You do the work properly anyway.
Jesus often withdrew to lonely places. He also worked through the hidden years in Nazareth. No crowd gathered there. No miracle from those days was written down. He went home. He lived under the same roof. He learned a trade. The Gospel gives those years only a few words, and then it lets them stay quiet.
Some of the most honest labour happens without a witness. It is shaped only by the standard you carry inside yourself. A joint that will not be inspected. A corner that will not be photographed. A repair finished after everyone has gone.
You do not need applause. You do not need to announce the quality of the invisible work.
The Father sees in secret. That is not a threat. It is a relief. At Mass we offer what people can see, and also what they cannot: the hour of preparation, the care no one measures, the decision to do a thing well because it will be used by others. Christ comes to the altar from a life that already knew hidden work. He does not despise it.
The joint will hold. The surface will last a little longer.
That is enough.
