The Sound of a Well-Made Joint

“From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped… makes the body grow.”Ephesians 4:16

It closes with a soft, certain sound. No gap. No force needed at the last moment. The pieces simply meet as they were meant to.

You feel it in the hands before you hear it. A quiet satisfaction that does not need to be spoken.

Jesus spoke of a body fitted together, of living stones, of work that holds because each part has found its place. St Paul used the same picture. The Church is not a pile of separate pieces. It is a body with joints. If the joint is true, the whole can bear weight. If it is forced, the crack will show later.

A well-made joint is almost invisible once it is finished. It does not ask for praise. It simply continues to hold.

You do not need to point it out. The structure will show the care, slowly, over years of use.

This is what the Mass is trying to make of us. People arrive from different houses, with different wounds and different strengths. Then Word and sacrament join them. Not by pressure. Not by pretending there is no difference. By bringing each person into the place where they can hold, and be held. Christ is the one who fits the pieces. Our work is to cut truly, to wait for the meeting, and not to force what will not yet close.

The good joint will not make a speech.

It will still be holding when the noise has gone.
