The Small Flag No One Notices
Updated: Sep 2
“The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”Matthew 13:33
It hangs in a corner of the room, or stands quietly on a shelf. A small flag. Not large enough to take over the space. Not placed where everyone must see it.
Most people who enter do not notice it at all. Those who do usually say nothing.
You know it is there. It marks a belonging that is real to you, even if it stays almost invisible to others.
Jesus spoke of the kingdom as something small at first: a mustard seed, yeast hidden in dough. Not everything true needs to announce itself loudly. Some things work from a corner. They do not shout. They remain.
For those who live between countries, small signs matter. A flag. A photograph. A familiar object placed without explanation. They are not speeches. They are quiet reminders of a loyalty that continues under ordinary days.
You do not need everyone to understand it. You do not need to explain why it is there.
The Mass is full of signs like this. A small flame. A cross. A drop of water. A piece of bread. People can walk past them and see very little. Those who live by them know what they hold. God does not ask us to make a display of every love we carry. He asks us to keep it true. We can belong here with a full heart, and still keep a modest sign of the place that first made us.
The small flag does not demand attention.
It simply stays.
