The Day of the Final Reveal

“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’”Revelation 21:5

In the workshop, the restorers and the owners share the same restlessness. Both wait for the cloth to be lifted. Both know that something broken is about to be seen again.

That moment is only a picture of a greater hope. God is not finished with us. In this life he works on us slowly: through prayer, through love, through suffering, through the Mass. The Church also teaches that those who die as friends of God, but are not yet ready for the full joy of heaven, are purified by him. We call this purgatory. It is not a second chance to choose God. It is God finishing his careful work of healing, so that a person can see him face to face.

We do not see all of that work now. Much of it is hidden. God knows every crack. He does not grow tired.

One day the work will be complete. Scripture says that God will make all things new. That is not only a repair of objects. It is the raising of the dead, the end of tears, and the healing of what sin and death have damaged. We shall see Christ. We shall see one another clearly.

At Mass we already receive a beginning of that gift. Christ comes to us now, while we are still unfinished. He does not wait until we are perfect before he draws near.

The cloth will not stay down forever. The One who restores us will finish what he has begun. Then the waiting will be over, and what was promised will be done.
