The Corridor That Remembers
Updated: Sep 6
“As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out.”Luke 7:12
This corridor has carried stretchers. It has carried slow footsteps. It has carried the silence that follows hard news.
The walls do not speak. Still, you can feel that many lives have passed this way. Joy has moved along it. So has fear. So has death. The place is not haunted. It is simply a place that has seen a great deal.
Jesus walked roads that already held other people’s stories. Near the gate of Nain he met a funeral already on its way. He did not pretend the road was empty or new. He did not erase what had happened before he arrived. He added his own presence to the place.
You do not have to name every memory this corridor holds. You do not have to pretend that your walk down it is the first.
At Mass we also enter a place used by many before us. Other people have prayed here, wept here, and given thanks here. We take our turn. Then others will take theirs. Christ is not only with the person walking now. He has been with those who came before, and he will be with those who come after.
Walk the corridor knowing that. You are not the first. You are not alone. Others have gone this way, and others will go after you.
